After the war and repatriation, Kertész's ended soon his brief career as a journalist and he turned to translation, specializing in German language works, and later emigrated to Berlin. In 1944, when he was fourteen, the Hungarian writer Imre Kertész was arrested and deported to Auschwitz and, from there, to Buchenwald.
